One of the most expensive pigments in history is Ultramarine Blue, made from the semi-precious gemstone lapis lazuli. This pigment was more precious than gold in Renaissance Europe, treasured for its radiant blue color. Sourced primarily from the mines in Afghanistan, the difficulty of extraction and transportation significantly contributed to its costliness. Ultramarine’s deep, vibrant hue made it a favorite among artists, including the renowned Michelangelo and Vermeer, who used it sparingly due to its high price. The introduction of a synthetic version in the 19th century by French chemist Guimet reduced the cost, making the once-exclusive pigment accessible to a broader range of artists. Still, natural ultramarine made from genuine lapis lazuli remains a luxury item in the art world not only for its historical value but also for its unmatched depth and warmth of color.
