In 1791. William Gregor. a minister and amateur geologist stumbled upon a new element in minerals found in Cornwall. England. While exploring a stream. he noticed black sand that was attracted to magnets. This piqued his interest and led him to conduct further analysis on the sand. He discovered two metal oxides: iron oxide and white metal oxide. Although he was unable to identify the latter. he was able to deduce some of its properties.
