ALPLA and PTT Global Chemical realise Thailand’s largest plastics recycling plant
Following 18 months of construction and installation, the ALPLA Group and PTT Global Chemical are opening the state-of-the-art ENVICCO recycling plant in Thailand. With an annual production capacity of 45,000 tonnes of recycled PET and HDPE, it is one of the largest recycling plants for these plastics in Asia. With this plant, the two companies will strengthen the region’s circular economy and supply the growing markets with high-quality recycled material. Thirty thousand tonnes of recycled, food-grade PET and 15,000 tonnes of recycled HDPE – the packaging and recycling specialist ALPLA and the chemical company PTT Global Chemical (GC) have realised Thailand’s largest plastics recycling plant of its kind. After around 18 months of construction, production is set to start at the ENVICCO joint venture. Located in an economic zone on the coast of the south-eastern province of Rayong, the plant is equipped with the latest recycling technology and production lines to manu...

HDPE pipe, known for its chemical resistance, flexibility, and durability, is commonly used in various industries. However, its performance can vary depending on temperature. Generally, this type of pipe can safely transport liquids up to 120F (49C) on a continuous basis. When using it for high-temperature applications, it is essential to assess the pipe’s ability to withstand thermal expansion and potential chemical reactions with the fluid being transported. It’s also important to take into account the pipe’s thermal history as prolonged exposure to high temperatures can weaken its mechanical properties. In some cases, alternative pipes like CPVC or stainless steel may be more suitable for these conditions. As always, carefully check the manufacturer’s specifications and evaluate the specific application needs when choosing a pipe type.

DWV pipe stands for Drain-Waste-Vent pipe, a type of piping system used in building construction to remove wastewater and sewage from fixtures, such as sinks, toilets, and showers, while also venting sewer gases to the outdoors. Made from materials like PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), or cast iron, these pipes are crucial for maintaining a building’s sanitation and preventing the buildup of harmful gases within living spaces. The design of the DWV system, including pipe size and route, ensures that water and waste can flow smoothly, aided by gravity, to the sewer or septic system without clogging, while simultaneously allowing air to circulate, which balances pressure and prevents water trap siphoning.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) pipe material specifications are primarily guided by ASTM standards, including ASTM D3035 for water pressure pipes, and ASTM F714 for larger diameter pipes. These specifications ensure HDPE pipes are made with high quality, resilient materials suitable for transporting potable water, chemicals, and gases. HDPE pipes are appreciated for their strength, flexibility, and resistance to corrosion and chemicals. The specifications cover dimensions, tolerances, physical properties, and testing requirements to confirm the pipe material’s integrity for various applications. Factors like density, melt flow index, and carbon black content (for UV protection) are essential specifications. Additionally, the ISO 4427 standard is globally recognized for HDPE piping systems. Considerations such as application-specific requirements, environmental conditions, and life expectancy should guide the selection process to ensure compliance and efficiency.

Casting and injection molding are both manufacturing processes used to create parts from various materials, but they employ different methods. Casting involves pouring liquid material, such as metal or plastic, into a mold where it solidifies. This process can work with a wider range of materials and is ideal for creating large or highly detailed parts. However, it can have slower production times and may result in less precision in the final product. Injection molding, on the other hand, involves injecting molten material under high pressure into a mold. It’s predominantly used with plastics and is highly efficient for mass-producing parts with tight tolerances and uniformity. Injection molding offers faster cycle times and more precise control over the properties of the final product but requires significant upfront investment in tooling.

Injection molding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by injecting molten material into a mold. Key process parameters include melt temperature, injection pressure, injection speed, and cooling time. Melt temperature must be precisely controlled to ensure the material is fluid enough for injection yet solidifies appropriately within the mold. Injection pressure ensures the material fills the entire mold cavity, while injection speed affects the quality and appearance of the final product. Cooling time is crucial for determining cycle time and affects the part’s dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties. Optimizing these parameters is essential for producing high-quality parts efficiently.
