Q
are basic amino acids lewis acids
KevinMonroe
DebbySmollett
Release Time:
August 18, 2024, 7:33 AM
Basic amino acids, by definition, have side chains that can accept a proton (H+), distinguishing them from acidic amino acids, which can donate a proton. This proton acceptance aligns with the characteristic of Lewis bases, not Lewis acids. In the Lewis theory of acid-base interaction, a Lewis acid is a species that accepts an electron pair, whereas a Lewis base donates an electron pair. However, in the context of Brønsted-Lowry acid-base theory, basic amino acids act as bases due to their ability to accept protons. The confusion often arises because the terminology “acid” in “amino acid” refers to the carboxylic acid group common to all amino acids, not their potential of being a Lewis acid or base. Therefore, referring to basic amino acids as Lewis acids is incorrect; if anything, they are closer to functioning as Lewis bases due to their electron pair donation capabilities, especially in their interaction with protons.

Q
do uncharged amino acids show up on gel electrophoresis
KingColeridge
KevinMonroe
Release Time:
August 17, 2024, 11:16 AM
Uncharged amino acids, in isolation, do not show up on gel electrophoresis under typical conditions because the technique separates molecules based on their charge-to-mass ratio. Without a charge, these amino acids would not migrate through the gel matrix effectively. However, when amino acids are part of larger peptides or proteins, the overall charge of the molecule, determined by its amino acid composition and the pH of the buffer, will affect its migration. Most proteins, under physiological conditions, carry a net charge and thus can be separated by gel electrophoresis. For detecting specific amino acids, more specialized techniques like chromatography or mass spectrometry are more appropriate. Electrophoresis is primarily used for separating charged biomolecules rather than individual uncharged amino acids.

Q
could edman degradation work with secondary amino acids
KevinMonroe
GeraldBarton
Release Time:
August 15, 2024, 2:04 PM
Edman degradation is a method used to sequence amino acids in peptides by sequentially removing one residue at a time from the amino-terminal end. It specifically requires the N-terminal amino acid to have a free amine group (-NH2) to react with phenylisothiocyanate (PITC) under mildly alkaline conditions, forming a phenylthiocarbamyl (PTC) derivative. This derivative is then cleaved to release the N-terminal amino acid as a thiazolinone derivative, which can be further converted into a more stable phenylthiohydantoin (PTH) derivative and identified. Secondary amino acids, however, have their amino group (NH) bonded to two alkyl groups, lacking a free amine group. Consequently, Edman degradation does not work with secondary amino acids because the essential initial reaction between the N-terminal amino group and PITC cannot occur. These characteristics limit Edman degradation to peptides or proteins that start with primary amino acids at the N-terminus and do not accommodate secondary ...

Q
which part of an amino acid is always acidic quizlet
KevinMonroe
KennedyEmma
Release Time:
August 15, 2024, 2:20 AM
In amino acids, the carboxyl group (-COOH) is always acidic. This is because it can donate a proton (H+) under basic conditions, making it acidic. Amino acids are organic compounds that contain both an amine group (-NH2) and a carboxyl group. These groups are attached to a central carbon atom along with a hydrogen atom and a variable R group. The amine group is basic, capable of accepting protons, while the carboxyl group is acidic. The acidity of the carboxyl group is primarily due to the resonance stabilization provided by the double-bond character of the C=O bond. This allows the negative charge left after proton donation to be delocalized over two oxygen atoms, making the loss of a proton energetically favorable. Understanding the nature of these functional groups is crucial in biochemistry, as it influences the behavior of amino acids in various biological processes.

Q
how many carbs in amino acids
ElsaJefferson
KevinMonroe
Release Time:
August 14, 2024, 1:18 PM
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and do not contain carbohydrates. They consist of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur, but their structure does not accommodate carbohydrates. When discussing macronutrients, it’s essential to differentiate: carbohydrates, proteins (made from amino acids), and fats serve different roles in nutrition. Carbohydrates are the body’s primary energy source, stored as glycogen in muscles and liver, or used immediately for energy. Amino acids, however, are utilized for building and repairing tissues, making enzymes and hormones, among other vital functions. Thus, seeking carbs in amino acids is a misunderstanding of their nutritional role and composition.

Q
what is the difference between abs plastic and polypropylene
KevinMonroe
ColbertSinclair
Release Time:
August 12, 2024, 11:13 PM
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and Polypropylene (PP) are both thermoplastics widely used in various industries due to their unique properties. ABS is known for its strength, rigidity, and toughness, particularly at low temperatures. It also offers excellent electrical insulation properties and can be easily machined and thermoformed. However, ABS has lower resistance to heat and chemicals compared to some other plastics. On the other hand, Polypropylene boasts exceptional chemical resistance and good heat resistance, making it ideal for applications involving hot water or food contact. It is also lightweight, flexible, and has a high strength-to-weight ratio. Despite these advantages, PP lacks the impact resistance of ABS, especially in cold conditions. Both materials have environmental impacts; however, PP is more readily recyclable than ABS. When choosing between the two, consider the specific requirements of your application.

Q
is biaxially oriented polypropylene biodegradable
QuentinSharp
KevinMonroe
Release Time:
August 12, 2024, 1:06 PM
Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) is a variant of polypropylene (PP), known for its strength, clarity, and excellent barrier properties. It is commonly used in packaging, labeling, and various industrial applications. However, like most conventional plastics derived from fossil fuels, BOPP is not biodegradable. In environmental conditions, it breaks down very slowly, taking decades to disintegrate, and even then, it fragments into microplastics rather than returning to nature in a benign way. Efforts are ongoing to develop more eco-friendly alternatives, including biodegradable options and recycling methods to mitigate the environmental impact of such materials. Consumers and businesses are encouraged to explore sustainable practices and materials when feasible.

Q
is fiber a polymer
RoyRhodes
KevinMonroe
Release Time:
August 11, 2024, 2:11 PM
Yes, fibers are considered polymers because they consist of long, repeating chains of molecules bonded together, creating a large molecule or macromolecule. These repeating units, or monomers, can be natural or synthetic, giving rise to different types of fibers. Natural fibers like cotton, wool, and silk are composed of cellulose, protein polymers, and others, respectively, all of which are polymeric in nature. Synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester, and acrylic are also polymers, created through a chemical process known as polymerization, where monomers are chemically bonded to form long, repeating chains. The polymer structure of fibers is essential for their properties such, as strength, durability, and flexibility, making them suitable for a multitude of applications in textiles, industry, and everyday objects.
