The polymers are macromolecules made up of bigger units of monomers, which are repeated subunits. They are formed as a result of polymerization reactions basically regarded to be of two kinds: addition and condensation polymerization. In the addition polymerization, unsaturated monomers like ethyleneand propylene have been linked together without the loss of atoms. This process most frequently follows radical, anionic, or cationic mechanisms. Condensation polymerization, on the contrary, combines monomers for which the reaction by-products are small molecules, such as water. Common examples are polyamides (nylon) and polyesters. The catalytic aspect is characteristically of great importance, in both cases since these accelerate the formation of polymers under specific conditions, for instance, temperature and pressure. These reactions may then be controlled to control the properties of the polymer, allowing it to be used for anything from plastics and textiles to adhesives and coatings...
