Caustic soda consumption in Pulp & Paper: What You Need to Know
As the pulp & paper sector market continues to grow each year, so does the consumption of caustic soda in the industry. Over the past seven years, the average annual growth rate of caustic soda consumption in the paper industry has been around 1.5%. Although there was a slight slowdown in 2020, the growth rate has rebounded significantly since 2021. Tecnon OrbiChem’s ResourceWise sister company Fisher International anticipates that paper industry caustic soda consumption will be 9% higher by the end of 2023 compared to 2019. Figure 1: Caustic Soda Consumption in the Paper Industry Which processes can we find caustic soda in? Caustic soda is primarily consumed by fibre lines and paper machines during pulp production. Caustic soda is first consumed in the fibre line, then feeds the paper machine. The three major pulp grades that feed the paper machine are chemical pulp, mechanical pulp, and recycled pulp. Among these grades, caustic soda is predominantly used in chemi...

Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a potent base used in various industrial and household applications, from soap making to drain cleaning. In its pure form, caustic soda is generally odorless. However, when it reacts with acidic substances or dissolves in water, it can generate heat and potentially release vapors that might carry smells from the reacting substances, but not from the caustic soda itself. It’s crucial to handle caustic soda with care, using appropriate personal protective equipment to avoid harmful reactions, including those that might produce harmful gases as a byproduct of its use.

Making soap with palm oil and caustic soda involves a process known as saponification. Palm oil, rich in lauric acid, is a popular choice for soap making due to its lathering and hardening properties. Caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide, acts as a saponifying agent, converting fats (palm oil) into soap and glycerine. Here are the steps: 1. **Safety First**: Wear protective gloves and goggles. Sodium hydroxide is corrosive and must be handled with care.2. **Prepare Lye Solution**: Slowly add caustic soda to water (never the reverse) in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes, stirring until dissolved. Allow to cool.3. **Mix Oils**: Heat the palm oil gently until melted and allow it to cool to around 100°F (38°C).4. **Combine Lye and Oils**: Slowly add the lye solution to the palm oil, stirring constantly until the mixture reaches “trace” – when the soap mixture thickens.5. **Mold**: Pour the mixture into molds, cover with a cloth, and let it set for 24 hours. Then, unmold and...

Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a highly versatile alkali used across various industries. Its primary purpose is to serve as a strong chemical base in the manufacture of pulp and paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps and detergents, and as a drain cleaner amongst other applications. In the chemical industry, it plays a crucial role in the production of an array of organic and inorganic compounds. Caustic soda is effective in the neutralization of acidic wastewaters, as well as in the extraction of alumina from bauxite for aluminum production. Due to its highly corrosive nature, it requires careful handling. Its wide range of applications underscores its importance in industrial and chemical processes, contributing significantly to modern manufacturing and sanitation efforts.
