It’s always recommended to use power steering fluid for the power steering system as it’s specially designed for this purpose. However, if you’re in a bind and need a temporary solution, automatic transmission fluid (ATF) can sometimes be used. It’s similar in many ways to power steering fluid. However, before using ATF or any other lubricants, do check your vehicle’s owner manual or talk to a mechanic for advice. Using the wrong fluid could cause significant damage to the system. Most importantly, never use engine oil, brake fluid, or any other lubricants as a substitute.
