Q
does cellulose feed candida
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Cellulose is a complex carbohydrate or polysaccharide consisting of glucose units linked by beta-glycosidic bonds, making it the primary structural component of plant cell walls. Unlike simple sugars and other carbohydrates that can be broken down by human digestive enzymes, humans lack the enzyme cellulase, which is necessary to break down cellulose into glucose molecules. Therefore, cellulose primarily passes through the human digestive system as insoluble fiber without being digested. Candida, a genus of yeast, primarily feeds on simple sugars (such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose) rather than complex polysaccharides like cellulose. This is because Candida lacks the mechanisms to efficiently break down cellulose into usable sugar forms. While Candida can adapt to various sugar sources, the enzyme systems of most Candida species are not well-equipped to degrade cellulose directly. Consequently, cellulose does not directly feed Candida in the human digestive tract. However, as part of a balanced diet, fiber including cellulose can support gut health, which may indirectly influence the balance of gut microbiota, including yeast populations.
