Q
how to animals metabolise cellulose
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Animals cannot metabolize cellulose directly due to the absence of the enzyme cellulase. However, many herbivores, such as cows and termites, rely on symbiotic relationships with microorganisms in their guts. These microorganisms possess the required cellulase to break down cellulose into simpler sugars, which the host animal can then absorb and use for energy. This process involves the cellulose being fermented in specialized stomach chambers (like the rumen in cows) or in the hindgut (as seen in horses and rabbits). After fermentation, the simpler sugars are absorbed through the gut wall. This efficient symbiotic system allows animals to convert tough plant fibers into usable energy, showcasing a remarkable adaptation to their diets.
