Q
what is the difference between emulsion and suspension
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Emulsions and suspensions are both mixtures, but distinct in their characteristics and applications. An emulsion is a mixture of two immiscible liquids, where one is dispersed in the other in the form of tiny droplets, usually stabilized by emulsifiers. The common example is oil in water or water in oil, such as mayonnaise or lotions. Emulsions are typically more stable and homogeneous than suspensions.
On the other hand, a suspension is a heterogeneous mixture of solid particles dispersed in a liquid, where the particles are larger and do not dissolve in the liquid. Over time, particles in a suspension may settle out due to gravity, which can be re-dispersed upon agitation. Suspensions are found in pharmaceuticals, paints, and mud. The key difference thus lies in the type of phases involved (liquid-liquid for emulsions and solid-liquid for suspensions) and stability, with emulsions often requiring emulsifiers to remain stable, whereas suspensions can separate over time.
