Over time, these metals were pushed up by volcanic activity, enriching the crust with iron. Secondly, Mars' thin atmosphere allows for frequent interactions between the iron-rich rocks, water, and oxygen. When water and oxygen come into contact with iron, they catalyze a chemical reaction that forms iron oxide, or rust. While Mars doesn't have liquid water on its surface today, there is ample evidence that it once did, including riverbeds and lake basins. These conditions, combined with Mars' atmospheric composition, create the perfect environment for rust to form, giving the planet its distinctive red color.
