Q
are suspensions also called emulsions
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Suspensions and emulsions are both types of mixtures, but they are not the same and thus cannot be used interchangeably. A suspension consists of solid particles dispersed throughout a liquid phase, where these particles tend to settle out over time unless mechanically mixed. Common examples include mud or dust suspended in water. On the other hand, an emulsion is a mixture of two immiscible (unblendable) liquids, such as oil and water, which remain stable due to the presence of an emulsifying agent that keeps the droplets from separating. Mayonnaise and vinaigrettes are typical examples of emulsions. While both exhibit similar properties like being heterogeneous mixtures, their components differ significantly. Therefore, referring to all suspensions as emulsions would be incorrect.
