Q
when was blue pigments invented
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
The invention and discovery of blue pigments span across various cultures and timelines. The first synthetic blue pigment, Egyptian blue, dates back to around 2200 BCE, created by heating a mixture including silica, lime, copper, and an alkali. This pigment was used in art and decoration by the ancient Egyptians, who valued the color blue for its association with the divine and the afterlife. Later, in the 9th century, the Chinese developed a pure blue pigment from cobalt ore, used famously in blue and white porcelain. In 1704, the synthetic pigment Prussian blue was accidentally discovered by the color maker Diesbach in Berlin, which became the first modern, synthetic color. This was a significant milestone because it provided a stable and consistent blue pigment that could be mass-produced. The invention of synthetic ultramarine in 1826 by the French chemist Guimet was another revolutionary development, as it was far cheaper than the natural ultramarine obtained from lapis lazuli, making blue pigments more accessible to artists and manufacturers. These milestones in the invention and discovery of blue pigments illustrate the human fascination with the color blue and its impact on art, culture, and industry throughout history.
