Q
are all asparagine amino acids glycosylated with n-linked crabohydrates
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Not all asparagine amino acids are glycosylated with N-linked carbohydrates. Glycosylation is a post-translational modification where carbohydrate moieties are attached to specific amino acids, typically asparagine (N), serine (S), or threonine (T). For N-linked glycosylation to occur, an asparagine residue must be part of a consensus sequence - Asparagine-X-Serine/Threonine (NX[S/T]), where X can be any amino acid except proline. This sequence determines whether an asparagine will be glycosylated. In proteins, only those asparagines that reside in this specific sequence and are exposed to the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum during protein synthesis will undergo N-linked glycosylation. Thus, not every asparagine in a protein is glycosylated; it depends on its location and the presence of the required sequence.
