Q
how many amino acids are encoded
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
In the genetic code, 20 standard amino acids are directly encoded by the tri-nucleotide sequences known as codons in the DNA. These amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, fundamental components of all living cells. Each amino acid is encoded by one or more of the 64 possible codons (sequences of three nucleotides) found in the mRNA, with some codons acting as stop signals, indicating the end of a protein-coding sequence rather than encoding an amino acid. This redundancy in the genetic code is known as codon degeneracy, which helps protect against mutations. While only 20 amino acids are directly encoded, modifications after translation can produce over 100 different amino acids found in proteins across different species, highlighting the complexity and versatility of biological macromolecules.
