Q
how are amino acids converted to carbohydrates
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Amino acids can be converted into carbohydrates through a metabolic process called gluconeogenesis, primarily occurring in the liver and, to a lesser extent, in the kidneys. This process is essential during periods of fasting, low carbohydrate diets, or intense exercise when glucose levels are depleted, and energy needs to be derived from non-carbohydrate sources. The amino acids undergo deamination, removing the amino group to produce a keto acid. This keto acid can then enter various pathways, ultimately being converted into glucose or glycogen. The pathways involved include the conversion of certain amino acids (glucogenic amino acids) into intermediates that can enter the Krebs cycle and be transformed into glucose precursors like pyruvate or oxaloacetate. This mechanism is critical for maintaining blood sugar levels and supplying energy to glucose-dependent tissues like the brain and red blood cells during periods when carbohydrate intake is insufficient.
