Polyethylene (PE) is a thermoplastic polymer that's widely used due to its durability and flexibility. When it comes to bonding PE sheets together, traditional adhesives often fail due to the material’s low surface energy and non-polar nature. However, there are methods to achieve a strong bond. One effective technique is using a chemical solvent weld. Products like Starbond Mender PE or Weld-On 403 Plastic Welder work well. First, clean both surfaces with isopropyl alcohol. Apply the solvent evenly along the seam, pressing the sheets together firmly. Hold them in place until the solvent evaporates and the bond sets, typically a few minutes. Another option is mechanical fastening, such as riveting or bolting, which can be used for thicker sheets. For a seamless appearance, heat welding can also be considered. This method involves melting the edges of the sheets and applying pressure to fuse them together. It requires specialized equipment but provides a strong, watertight bond. Regardless of the method chosen, always follow safety guidelines and work in a well-ventilated area.
PVC glue, also known as PVC cement, works through a process of chemical welding rather than traditional adhesive action. When applied, it temporarily softens the surfaces of the PVC pieces to be joined, allowing the material's polymers to intermingle. As the solvent in the glue evaporates, the PVC hardens again, resulting in a bond that is often stronger than the surrounding material itself. This process is called solvent welding. The glue contains a mixture of PVC resin and a solvent, usually tetrahydrofuran and methyl ethyl ketone. Proper application requires clean, dry surfaces and adequate application of the glue, followed by firm pressure and enough curing time. It's crucial to use it in a well-ventilated area due to the strong vapors released.
