Q
how to know yarn thickness
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
To determine yarn thickness, you need to understand the common systems used for measuring it, such as the Metric System (measured in meters per gram), the English System (measured in hanks per pound), and the Count System (measured in hanks per ounce). Yarn weight can also be described using descriptive terms like lace, fingering, sport, DK, worsted, bulky, etc. To measure the thickness yourself, wrap the yarn around a ruler or a notched tool ten times and measure the total width; divide by ten to get the average width in millimeters. This method works best for consistent yarns but may be less accurate for more variable handspun yarns. Another way is to use a set of gauges or needles and see how the yarn behaves. If it's too loose or tight, adjust accordingly. Lastly, yarn labels often specify recommended needle sizes which can give you an idea of its thickness.
