Polyester resin is a synthetic material derived from the reaction between polyols (alcohols with multiple functional groups) and dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides. The most common polyester resins are made from the esterification of glycols such as ethylene glycol with phthalic anhydride, resulting in a polymer chain. This process creates a thermosetting plastic that, upon curing, is durable, water-resistant, and easy to mold, making it popular in the manufacturing of fiberglass products, coatings, and adhesives. The primary raw materials, like petrochemicals (from crude oil), are refined to produce the chemicals needed for polyester resin synthesis, indicating its dependency on the petrochemical industry. Advances in biotechnology and green chemistry are exploring sustainable sources for these resins, aiming to reduce environmental impact.
