Synthetic polymers degrade through various mechanisms, primarily physical and chemical processes. Physical degradation involves mechanical forces breaking down larger polymer chains into smaller fragments. This can occur through abrasion, shearing, or other forms of physical stress. Chemical degradation, on the other hand, involves reactions that alter the chemical structure of the polymer. These reactions can be catalyzed by heat, light (photodegradation), moisture, or microorganisms. For instance, ultraviolet radiation can cause photodegradation, leading to the breakdown of chemical bonds within the polymer. Similarly, hydrolysis, the cleavage of polymers using water, can also lead to degradation. Some polymers are designed to be biodegradable, enabling microorganisms to break them down into simpler compounds. However, many common synthetic polymers, like polyethylene and polypropylene, are highly resistant to degradation, leading to environmental concerns. To mitigate these issues, researchers are developing new polymers with improved degradability profiles and exploring methods to recycle and repurpose existing materials more effectively.
