Polymers can be both organic and inorganic. Organic polymers, such as proteins, cellulose, and plastics like polyethylene, consist mostly of carbon and hydrogen. These materials are typically derived from petroleum or living organisms, embodying chains of carbon atoms. In contrast, inorganic polymers, such as silicones, contain elements other than carbon as their backbone - for example, silicon. The distinction lies in the polymer's elemental composition and source, with organic polymers being based on carbon atom chains, while inorganic polymers have a backbone formed by elements like silicon, phosphorus, or sulfur.
When comparing Roxul (now branded as Rockwool) and cellulose for soundproofing, both materials offer distinct advantages. Roxul, made from basalt rock and recycled slag, is denser, providing excellent sound absorption and is also fire-resistant. Its density allows it to dampen vibrations and reduce the transmission of sound effectively. On the other hand, cellulose, made primarily from recycled paper with added fire retardants, is also a good sound insulator, particularly for mid to high-frequency sounds. It can be installed in cavities where it forms a dense and solid barrier, absorbing sound waves. However, its performance might slightly lag behind Roxul's in terms of low-frequency sound absorption because of its lighter density. Both are eco-friendly options, but Roxul generally edges out with better overall soundproofing capabilities, especially for a wider range of frequencies.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) does not contain sugar. It is a polyether compound, meaning it is composed of repeating units of ethylene oxide. It's widely used in industrial applications, as well as in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics for its water solubility and non-toxicity. The name might imply a glycol, a type of alcohol compound, but it does not relate to sugars, chemically speaking. Sugars are classified as carbohydrates, which are made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in specific arrangements that differ from the structure of PEG. This makes PEG distinct from sugar compounds both in function and chemical composition, and thus, it's not a source of dietary sugar or calories.
