PVC, or Polyvinyl Chloride, and vinyl are terms often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle distinction. PVC is a type of vinyl and the most common one. Vinyl is a synthetic resin or plastic made from ethylene (from crude oil) and chlorine (from salt). PVC is made by polymerizing vinyl chloride monomers, essentially making it a specific kind of vinyl compound. Laying polyester resin over epoxy resin is possible but requires careful preparation to ensure proper adhesion. Epoxy resins generally have strong adhesion properties and can adhere well to a wide range of materials, including cured polyester resin. However, polyester resin does not naturally adhere well to epoxy due to its different chemical structure and the surface characteristics of cured epoxy. To successfully lay polyester over epoxy, ensure the epoxy surface is fully cured and sanded to create a mechanical bond. Start by cleaning the epoxy surface to remove any contaminants. Then, sand the epoxy with coarse-grit sandpaper (80-150 grit) to create a rough surface that will help the polyester resin to grip onto. Clean the sanded surface to remove any dust or particles. When applying the polyester resin, follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing and curing times. It's also advisable to apply a small test patch to ensure proper adhesion before proceeding with the entire project. Using a suitable primer designed for promoting adhesion between epoxy and polyester can also enhance the bond.
The Z offset in a 3D printer is a critical parameter that adjusts the distance between the print nozzle and the bed. It ensures the first layer adheres well without being too squished or too loose. The ideal Z offset varies between printers and materials but generally ranges from 0.1mm to 0.3mm. Finding the perfect Z offset involves trial and error, starting with the manufacturer's recommendation and adjusting based on the first layer's quality. A too-high offset results in poor adhesion, while a too-low offset can cause the nozzle to scrape the bed. Calibration prints or using a feeler gauge can help in adjusting this setting accurately for optimal print quality.
