Q
is baking soda and vinegar caustic
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (a dilute solution of acetic acid) are not caustic when used separately. Caustic substances are strong alkalis that can corrode organic tissue by chemical action. While baking soda is a mild base and vinegar is a weak acid, neither possess the aggressive chemical properties found in strongly caustic substances such as lye (sodium hydroxide). When mixed together, they react to form carbon dioxide gas, water, and sodium acetate, which is a harmless reaction commonly used for educational purposes and household cleaning. However, neither of the products nor the reaction mixture is considered caustic or capable of causing chemical burns under normal conditions of use.
