Q
how to size & buy pvc
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
When sizing and buying PVC, it's crucial to understand both the diameter and the thickness of the pipe. Diameter is often referenced in terms of nominal size, which correlates more closely to the pipe's interior diameter than the exterior. Common diameters range from 1/2 inch to 2 inches for most home projects, but sizes can extend far beyond for industrial needs. The thickness of the PVC, referred to as the schedule, denotes the wall thickness. For example, Schedule 40 PVC is the most common for residential plumbing, offering a balance between strength and flexibility. Schedule 80 PVC has a thicker wall for higher pressure applications. It's also important to consider the type of PVC based on the project, such as uPVC for piping or CPVC for higher temperature handling. Ensure compatibility with existing systems or requirements. When purchasing, buy a bit more than estimated to account for any mistakes or adjustments. Many hardware stores will cut the PVC to your desired length, helping minimize waste.
