Wool yarn production is a fascinating process that turns sheep fleece into yarn. It begins with shearing the sheep to collect the wool, which is then cleaned to remove debris and grease in a process called scouring. After drying, the clean fleece is carded, a process where the wool fibers are brushed and aligned using either hand carders or a carding machine, making it easier to spin. Spinning can be done by hand or with spinning wheels/machines, where the fibers are twisted together to form yarn. The thickness of the yarn can be adjusted by controlling the amount of fiber and the degree of twist. Finally, the yarn is often plied, twisting two or more strands together to increase strength, and washed again to set the twist. This multi-step procedure transforms raw wool into yarn that can be used for knitting, weaving, and crafting.
