I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
A surfactant, short for surface-active agent, plays a critical role both in biological systems and in various industrial applications. Medically, it refers to a substance that reduces surface tension within the fluids of the lungs, facilitating easier breathing by helping the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs) to expand and exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide more effectively. This is crucial for proper lung function, and deficiencies in surfactant production, as seen in premature infants, can lead to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Surfactants are also used therapeutically to treat or prevent RDS and in certain lung conditions to improve lung function by making breathing easier.
