Heating PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) does release chlorine gas, particularly when the material is burned or overheated. PVC is composed of 57% chlorine by weight, derived from its primary component, vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). When subjected to high temperatures, the chemical structure of PVC breaks down, releasing toxic gases, including hydrogen chloride (HCl), phosgene (COCl2), and other organochlorine compounds. Among these, HCl is the most significant product and can further react with water vapor to form hydrochloric acid. This process poses serious health risks and environmental concerns due to the corrosive nature and toxicity of the released gases. It's important to note that normal usage of PVC products doesn't pose these risks; they typically become hazardous only under extreme conditions, such as during fires. To mitigate these hazards, proper disposal methods and avoiding burning PVC materials are recommended.
