Thin Film Field Effect Transistors (TFTs) are semiconductor devices widely used in displays, such as LCDs and OLEDs. They leverage a thin film of semiconductor material, typically silicon, deposited on a substrate. The transistor has three terminals: source, drain, and gate. When a voltage is applied to the gate terminal, it creates an electric field which modulates the conductivity of the semiconductor layer, allowing current to flow between the source and drain. This enables the TFT to act as a switch or amplifier. The thin film allows for the transistor to be made very small, leading to higher resolution displays. Moreover, TFT technology is beneficial because it can be manufactured at a relatively low cost and with flexible substrates, paving the way for innovations like flexible screens.
