Q
disadvantages of using polypropylene
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Polypropylene, while popular for its strength and versatility, has several disadvantages. First, it's susceptible to UV degradation, making products brittle when exposed to sunlight for extended periods. This limits outdoor application without additives. Second, it has a high thermal expansion coefficient, leading to dimensional instability in varying temperatures. Polypropylene also has a relatively low melting point (around 160°C), which can be problematic in high-temperature environments or applications. Moreover, it’s not as resistant to chlorinated solvents and aromatics, posing chemical compatibility issues. Recycling polypropylene is challenging due to its low density, making separation from other plastics difficult in recycling processes. This contributes to environmental pollution. Finally, despite being considered safe, there are concerns about its leaching in containers meant for food storage, potentially impacting health.
