Polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as PVC, was discovered by accident on two separate occasions in the 19th century. The first discovery was by the French chemist Henri Victor Regnault in 1835, and then again in 1872 by the German chemist Eugen Baumann. Both times, the polymer was formed by exposing vinyl chloride gas to sunlight, leading to a white solid material inside the vessels. However, PVC's potential wasn't fully realized until the early 20th century, when methods to process and commercialize this rigid material into a more flexible form were developed. The discovery of adding plasticizers in 1926 by Waldo Semon greatly expanded PVC’s applications, making it one of the most versatile and widely used plastics in the world today.
