Titanium was discovered in 1791 by William Gregor, an English clergyman and mineralogist, in the mineral ilmenite from a stream in Cornwall, England. Gregor identified the presence of a new element in ilmenite when he found black sand by a stream and noticed it was attracted by a magnet. After analyzing the sand, Gregor realized it contained a metal not previously recognized. Around the same time, the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth independently discovered the element in rutile, a mineral found in Hungary, and named it titanium after the Titans of Greek mythology. Klaproth's naming of the element was later adopted universally. The discovery of titanium was significant due to its strong, lightweight characteristics and resistance to corrosion, making it highly valuable in aerospace, medical, and sporting goods applications.
