Q
what is ilmenite made of
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Ilmenite is a titanium-iron oxide mineral (FeTiO3) that is significant as a primary source of titanium. This mineral is composed of about 36.8% titanium dioxide (TiO2) and 63.2% iron oxide (FeO). Ilmenite is formed in igneous rocks and is often found in layered intrusions or in heavy mineral sands due to its resistance to weathering. Its properties make it valuable not just for titanium production, which is used in creating lightweight, strong alloys for aerospace and other high-performance applications, but also in the manufacture of pigments, welding electrodes, and in the process of steel-making as a source of titanium to refine the structure and control grain size.
