Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is produced primarily from the mineral ilmenite through two processes: the sulfate process or the chloride process. The sulfate process involves digesting ilmenite (FeTiO3) or titanium slag with sulfuric acid to produce a solution of titanyl sulfate (TiOSO4), which is then hydrolyzed to form a hydrated titanium dioxide precipitate. The simplified equation for this process can be represented as: FeTiO3 + H2SO4 → TiOSO4 + FeSO4 + H2O. This precipitate is calcined to yield titanium dioxide. In contrast, the chloride process involves reacting titanium-containing ores with chlorine to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4), which is then purified and reacted with oxygen at high temperatures: TiCl4 + O2 → TiO2 + 2Cl2. Both processes are energy-intensive and have environmental impacts, but the chloride process generally produces a purer product and generates fewer by-products. Each method has its applications, and the selection often depends on the desired properties of the TiO2 and environmental considerations.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are predominantly used in sunscreen due to their ability to absorb and reflect UV radiation, protecting the skin from damage. They are also used in cosmetics, paints, and coatings for their ability to provide opacity and durability. Other applications include food additives, pharmaceuticals, and photocatalysis in solar cells due to their strong photocatalytic activity. Due to possible environmental and health risks, careful consideration and research is required during application.

An injection blow molding machine combines injection molding and blow molding technologies for producing high-quality, seamless plastic bottles and containers. Initially, the machine injects molten plastic into a mold to form a preform. This preform is then moved to a blow mold where it is inflated into its final shape using pressurized air. This process is particularly favored for its precision, repeatability, and ability to produce products with uniform wall thicknesses. Injection blow molding is widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food beverage industries for its capability to produce containers with excellent clarity, rigidity, and barrier properties. By integrating both molding processes, manufacturers can reduce production time and costs, while ensuring high product quality and detail.
