Q
how is titanium dioxide manufactured
I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
Typically. titanium dioxide is generated through a method called chlorination. This entails obtaining and refining both chlorine and high-temperature titanium from ores and slags containing the element. The process involves a reaction between titanium ore and either chlorine or coke in a fluidized bed reactor at high temperatures. resulting in the production of titanium tetrachloride TiCl4. Afterwards. the TiCl4 is distilled. oxidized with oxygen. and refined to yield titanium dioxide. It should be noted that this process requires a significant amount of energy and raises environmental concerns due to the by-products of chlorine production.
