To identify the engine type of your vehicle. consult the owner's manual for engine specifications. If unavailable. refer to the label or sticker under the hood. typically found on the engine or timing belt cover. The Vehicle Identification Number VIN is also a valuable resource. located on either the dashboard or driver's door frame. and encodes various vehicle details including engine type. You can use your VIN to search online or contact your dealer for comprehensive information about the engine. Alternatively. you can locate the engine model number engraved or stamped on the block itself. If unsure about accurately identifying and locating relevant details. consider seeking advice from a mechanic or automotive specialist.
1. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position, but don't start the engine.
2. Press and hold the "Read" button on the scanner to view the engine's error codes.
3. Write down the codes that are displayed and then press the "Erase" button to reset the system.
4. Unplug the scanner and start the vehicle. If there are no problems with the engine, the "Check Engine" light will reset itself.
5. If the "Check Engine" light comes back on, use the error codes that you wrote down and refer to your vehicle's service manual or a licensed mechanic for further direction.
Remember, resetting the check engine light without addressing the underlying problem does not actually fix your vehicle notwithstanding the fact that the light will go off temporarily. You should always get professional advice to determine the cause of the light before resetting it.
Here are the steps:
1. Sit in the driver's seat of the Silverado and reach underneath the dashboard and locate the OBD-II port. It's usually situated to the left of the steering column under the dashboard.
2. Plug the OBD-II scanner into the OBD-II port of the vehicle. Most scanners will turn on automatically once connected.
3. Turn on the Silverado's ignition but do not start the engine (turn the key to the run position).
4. Operate the scanner and select the "Erase Codes" option. The codes causing the engine light to come on will be erased.
5. Remove the scanner from the OBD-II port and turn off the ignition. Wait a little, then turn on the engine. The check engine light should be off.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Clearing the code without fixing the problem that triggered the code won't do any good. Your check engine light will just come back on. Make sure you properly diagnose and fix the problem beforehand.
Also remember that the light also might come back if the problem persists or if it was not solved completely. If the check engine light comes back on, it may be best to bring your vehicle to a mechanic for a proper diagnosis and repair.
Lastly, keep in mind that in some areas, erasing engine codes can cause your vehicle to fail emissions tests until the computer system has had enough time to record data showing that the vehicle is properly functioning.
