GACL to invest Rs 490 cr in power projects

VADODARA: Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL) plans to invest Rs 490 crore to set up a power unit at Dahej and a wind mill project in Kutch district of Gujarat by year-end.

The company is planning to set up a 90-MW gas based power unit at Dahej for Rs 350 crore and another 40-MW wind mill project at Rs 140 crore in Kutch, GACL Managing Director Guruprasad Mohapatra said.

“Both these plants would help in meeting the energy equipments requirements as we are in the process of increasing the capacity of our caustic soda manufacturing plant from the existing 1,200 tonnes per day to 2,000 tonnes per day,” Mohapatra said.

The projects are expected to come up by the year-end, he said.

GACL has undertaken 600 tonne per day (tpd) caustic soda expansion project, 50 tpd anhydrous aluminium cholrideplant at Dahej along with the 75 tpd hydrogen paroxide plant expansion project.

According to Mohapatra, the city-based firm has already approved the ambitious investment plan of Rs 2,600 crore.

Established in 1973, GACL has emerged as India’s leading chlor-alkali giant.

GACL promoted as a joint sector company with an initial capacity to produce 37,425 tpa caustic soda, is a leading player of caustic soda in the country with the capacity of 3,96,000 tpa.

Maintaining its leadership in caustic-cloride industry with 18 per cent market share, the company has persified into value added products, including sodium cyanide, cholromathane, hydrogen paroxide, potassium carbonate and phosphoric acidumium chloride.
