The Kroll process. discovered in the 1940s. is commonly used to produce titanium. It involves multiple steps and was initially developed using 20 different types of titanium. Firstly. titanium is extracted from ores such as rutile or ilmenite to obtain titanium dioxide TiO2. The next step involves converting the extracted titanium dioxide into titanium tetrachloride TiCl4 by mixing it with coke and chloride and applying high temperatures around 900 degrees Celsius. The resulting titanium tetrachloride is then reduced using argon and magnesium streams. This reaction produces magnesium chloride and pure titanium. To further refine the titanium. it undergoes a heat treatment to remove any residual magnesium and magnesium chloride. resulting in a pure titanium sponge. This sponge can then be melted with other elements like aluminum or vanadium in a furnace to create an alloy of desired grade. From here. the molten alloy can be shaped into rods. sheets or powders depending on its intended use. Although this complex process is energy-intensive. advancements are being made to improve its efficiency as well as reduce production costs.
The twenty standard amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and play crucial roles in various biological processes. They are alanine (Ala, A), arginine (Arg, R), asparagine (Asn, N), aspartic acid (Asp, D), cysteine (Cys, C), glutamic acid (Glu, E), glutamine (Gln, Q), glycine (Gly, G), histidine (His, H), isoleucine (Ile, I), leucine (Leu, L), lysine (Lys, K), methionine (Met, M), phenylalanine (Phe, F), proline (Pro, P), serine (Ser, S), threonine (Thr, T), tryptophan (Trp, W), tyrosine (Tyr, Y), and valine (Val, V). Each has a unique side chain that determines its chemical properties and thus its role in protein structure and function. For instance, hydrophobic amino acids like leucine and valine tend to be found in the interior of globular proteins, while charged amino acids like arginine and glutamic acid are typically on the surface. Understanding these properties is essential for predicting protein behavior and function.
Targhee-Columbia yarn, known for its softness and durability, is a blend from two sheep breeds: Targhee and Columbia. A similar yarn would be one that balances these qualities, such as Polwarth or Corriedale yarn. Polwarth yarn offers a similar soft touch and good elasticity, making it a close match for projects requiring a gentle yet durable material. Corriedale yarn, on the other hand, provides excellent resilience and a soft-to-the-touch feel, akin to Targhee-Columbia, but with a slightly sturdier texture. Both these alternatives capture the essence of what makes Targhee-Columbia yarn beloved, making them suitable substitutes for knitters and crocheters looking for similar yarn characteristics in their textile projects.
