Polymer LEDs (PLEDs), also known as light-emitting polymers, function by using a thin film of organic polymer that emits light when an electric current is applied. These polymers are essentially large molecular chains that possess the ability to conduct electricity and, through electroluminescence, produce light. The process starts when a voltage is applied across the polymer layer, causing electrons to move from the negative electrode (cathode) to the positive electrode (anode). As electrons move, they fill the "holes" (positive charge carriers) in the polymer, releasing energy in the form of photons (light). PLEDs can emit a wide range of colors, based on the polymer material used, making them versatile for displays and lighting. They offer benefits like flexibility, lower energy consumption, and the potential for cheaper production compared to traditional LEDs, which are made from inorganic materials. However, they typically have shorter lifespans and lower brightness levels but advancements continue to improve their performance and durability.
