Self-healing polymers are made from long-chain molecules that can autonomously repair damage without external intervention. These materials typically incorporate microcapsules filled with a healing agent and a catalyst within the polymer matrix. When the material suffers a crack or damage, the microcapsules break open, releasing the healing agent which then reacts with the catalyst to repair the damage by polymerizing and filling in the cracks. Alternatively, some self-healing polymers rely on reversible chemical bonds or supramolecular interactions (like hydrogen bonding) that allow the material to mend itself. Innovations in self-healing polymers are inspired by biological systems, aiming to extend the lifespan and reduce the maintenance needs of various products ranging from consumer goods to infrastructure.
