Oil alkyd
resin is a synthetic polymer modified by the addition of oil, used predominantly in the production of coatings and
paints. Derived from polyols, dicarboxylic acids, and fatty acids, these resins form durable, tough, and chemically resistant finishes upon drying. Their versatility allows for a range of applications from household paints to industrial coatings, offering excellent adhesion, fast-drying times, and a high gloss finish.
Alkyd resins' compatibility with various pigments and dyes also makes them popular in artistic and commercial color applications. Their unique blend of oil length (the amount of oil in the formulation) can adjust properties like gloss, durability, and drying time, catering to specific needs. However, these resynthesize contain solvents that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), raising environmental and health concerns, prompting the development of waterborne and high solids alkyds as more sustainable options.
