Dow Chemical and Avery Dennison have jointly developed a new, innovative and sustainable hot melt labeling adhesive solution that mechanically recycles polyolefin film labels and polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE) packaging. This adhesive is the first of its kind in the label market and can be approved for recycling in the color stream (B grade) through Recyclass HDPE.

Hot-melt adhesives provide excellent performance for labeling refrigerated applications such as food, but standard hot-melt adhesives reduce the availability of recycled PP/PE materials. Because this new olefin hot melt adhesive is chemically the same as PP/PE packaging, the label and packaging can be processed and recycled together as a single material when used in conjunction with polyolefin paper. As a result, it is more recyclable than standard hot melt adhesives without compromising performance.

The development of the new adhesive was driven by Avery Dennison's design-for-recycling thinking and Dow Chemical's polymer science expertise. It is based on The Dow Chemical Company's AFFINITY GA polymer sold by Avery Dennison in the Europe, Middle East and North Africa (EMENA) region as CF3050.

Jark Pitko, Principal Researcher at Avery Dennison "The joint launch of this new olefin hot melt adhesive is a great example of the innovation that can be realized in collaboration with partners across the supply chain, such as Dow Chemical." Munshi, Global Marketing Manager, Packaging and Specialty Plastics at Dow, added, "Dow's goal is to deliver 3 million tons of recycled and renewable solutions annually by 2030." "This collaboration will help accelerate the economic contribution of plastic packaging to circularity."
