Westport has previously partnered with Tata Motors to develop and launch Tata Motors’ now BS-IV certified natural gas spark ignition engine for commercial vehicles.

Mumbai: As the Indian automotive industry prepares to meet the Bharat Requirement 6 Stage I emission standards by the time they come into force in two years, contracts have been signed between Tata Motors and Greavess Cotton with foreign companies for the development and supply of less polluting engines.

Tata Motors, India’s largest truck maker, has entered into a partnership with Canada’s Westport Fuel Systems to develop and supply components for a four-six cylinder natural gas spark ignition engine for commercial vehicles. Greaves Cotton, a specialist in small commercial vehicle engines, has partnered with Italian automaker Piagioio to supply BS-VI diesel and alternative fuel engines.

The three-wheeler market is expected to face significant challenges in 2020 as emissions regulations become increasingly stringent. The deal between Greaves and Piagio will address this with one of the most important last mile connectivity solutions in the transportation market.

For Greaves Cotton’s deal with Piaggio is part of its overall strategy to become a complete powertrain solutions provider and fuel-agnostic company. The company has not only started developing new diesel engine platforms in the three-wheeler segment, but has also partnered with Pinnacle to develop new diesel engine platforms Technologies to develop gasoline and CNGG engines and Bangalore-based Altigren to develop electric powertrains.

Greaves Nageshagesh Basavanhalli said that the market must be ready with technological solutions to meet emission regulations by 2020. Basavanhalli added: “Our new solutions will cover a wide range of fuels such as gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas and electric vehicles.”

Currently, Piaggio supplies more than 25,000 In addition, the company supplies 35,000 to 40,000 tricycle engines per year. Diesel mini trucks. The development of gasoline, CNG and electric solutions will help the company diversify further.

Under the agreement with Tata Motors, Westport Fuel Systems will supply key natural gas components to Indian automakers. It includes advanced gas injection systems and controls. Greaves Cotton It can also supply a range of engines for Piaggio.

The addition of BS-VI CNC engines to its portfolio is an attempt by Tata Motors to stay ahead of the curve and expand its market share in the commercial vehicle segment.

Westport has previously partnered with Tata Motors to develop and launch Tata Motors, now BS.-IV certified natural gas spark ignition engines for commercial vehicles.

Unlike the evolving market, the transition from Euro IV took nearly a decade. At the Euro VI stage, Indian automakers have only five years to transition to the equivalent of the BS-VIBS-IV standard. Given the short deadline, domestic automakers need to work with powertrain experts in 2020 To complete the task within the year.

Rajendra Petkar, Vice President and Director, Powertrain Engineering, Tata Motors “Tata Motors remains committed to achieving these targets, especially as natural gas becomes increasingly important in our products.” “We are committed to strengthening our natural gas engine portfolio to further increase our market share.”
