Panzhihua pioneered the high-value utilization of high-titanium blast furnace slag

Recently, the reporter learned from the Municipal Science and Technology Bureau that the list of winners of the 2022 Sichuan Province Science and Technology Award was recently announced that the "High-value Utilization Technology of High-titanium Blast Furnace Slag Based on Selective Carbonization-Chlorination Theory" led by Panzhihua Steel won the first prize in the Science and Technology Progress Award.

  Aiming at the world-class problem of comprehensive utilization of high-titanium blast furnace slag, the project has gone through more than 30 years of research and systematic innovation from basic theory, process technology, key equipment to industrial application. It has invented the "high-temperature carbonization-low temperature chlorination" of high-titanium blast furnace slag. The utilization method of tailings resource utilization, built a new process flow, developed the first set of special equipment, broke through eight key core technologies, and pioneered the industrial application of blast furnace slag to improve titanium on a global scale. A major leap has been achieved from solid waste slag to high-value products.

  Relying on the results of the project, Panzhihua Steel has built a production line that processes 100,000 tons of high-titanium blast furnace slag to produce 37,000 tons of titanium tetrachloride per year. It has been running steadily for three years and has reached production capacity. The titanium tetrachloride produced is used to prepare chlorinated titanium dioxide and sponge titanium products, breaking the over-reliance of China's high-end titanium industry on foreign high-quality raw materials. While improving titanium, the green resource utilization of tailings has been realized, and high-titanium blast furnace slag has been completely "turned waste into treasure", leading the technological progress of the titanium industry.

  The project has been authorized to have 68 Chinese invention patents and 2 foreign invention patents, published 20 academic papers, and took the lead in formulating 3 group standards. The overall technology has reached the international leading level. After the full quantitative utilization of high-titanium blast furnace slag, the comprehensive utilization rate of Panxi titanium resources will increase from 28% to 60%, which can effectively guarantee the safe supply of titanium resources in China and achieve simultaneous improvement of ecological, economic and social benefits. China plays a leading role in the innovation and development of comprehensive utilization technology for associated low-grade resources and industrial solid waste.
