Chuxiong: Undertaking industrial transfer "titanium" has a future

On the afternoon of September 3rd, the 2023 China Industrial transfer and Development docking activity (Yunnan) with the theme of "New Light Metal Materials and New Development Titanium" was held at Kunming Dianchi International Convention and Exhibition Center. Chuxiong Prefecture promoted the development of titanium industry.

Chuxiong Prefecture has a unique advantage in the development of titanium industry, known as "Central Yunnan Titanium Valley", and has been identified as an important titanium industry development base by Yunnan Province. After years of development, Chuxiong Prefecture has formed a relatively complete titanium industry chain from titanium mining to high titanium slag, titanium dioxide, sponge titanium, titanium processing trade and so on, becoming the only region in the country and even in the world with a complete titanium industry chain. Titanium new material cluster has been awarded the title of "new industrial demonstration base" and "growing manufacturing cluster" in Yunnan Province.

To undertake industrial transfer and create a new highland of "Central Yunnan Titanium Valley", Chuxiong Prefecture has the following advantages:

Resource advantage. China's titanium reserves account for about 48% of the world's titanium resources, while Sichuan Panxi and Yunnan provinces account for about 95% of China's titanium resources. Central Yunnan and Panzhihua, Sichuan are defined as "vanadium and titanium resource bases in China". Chuxiong is rich in ilmenite resources, which are mainly distributed in Wuding and Lufeng, accounting for 1/3 of the proved ilmenite in the province, ranking first in the province.

Green electricity advantage. The annual utilization hours of photovoltaic and wind power in Chuxiong Prefecture are both 30% higher than the national average, and the approved photovoltaic resources development project ranks first in the province. It is a clear demonstration zone for the integrated development of green energy and green manufacturing in Yunnan Province. Chuxiong Prefecture is an important hub node of power convergence in Yunnan Province, and it is also an important starting point and channel for power transmission from west to east. At present, Chuxiong Prefecture is speeding up the construction of "three benchmarking" for the development of new energy in the province, the coordinated development of "source network, load and storage", and the demonstration zone of a new provincial power system at the provincial level. a high-voltage and large-capacity power grid with 500kV as the support, 220kV as the backbone and 110kV with full coverage has been built, and the provincial power grid hub connecting central and western Yunnan has been basically formed. the annual download capacity can reach more than 25 billion kilowatt-hours, and the proportion of renewable energy is more than 95%.

Advantage of electricity price. The titanium industry chain accounts for a large proportion of electricity cost in all production links of high titanium slag, sponge titanium, titanium smelting and processing, and electricity price is the main index considered by enterprises in the investment promotion of green titanium industry projects. From a national point of view, hydropower installation in Yunnan Province accounts for more than 70% of the total installed capacity, and the electricity price of hydropower is relatively low, so it has a strong competitiveness in the whole country.

Cluster advantage. Driven by leading enterprises such as Longbai Group and Baowu Special Metallurgy, the titanium industry in Chuxiong Prefecture has developed rapidly and formed a highly competitive industrial foundation. Longbai Yunnan base has formed an annual production capacity of 80, 000 tons of high titanium slag, 35000 tons of sponge titanium and 260000 tons of chlorinated titanium dioxide. Through technical transformation and new advanced production line, it will soon form an annual production capacity of 240000 tons of high titanium slag, 50, 000 tons of sponge titanium and 300000 tons of chlorinated titanium dioxide. Baowu Teye's Yunnan titanium industry is an emerging force in the research, production, marketing and application of titanium and titanium alloys in China. It has successfully developed and produced China's first wide-width cold-rolled titanium coil, breaking the monopoly of developed countries on China's titanium strip coil market. A number of innovative achievements are in the forefront of the industry. The head enterprise has led the titanium industry in Chuxiong Prefecture to gather, and has formed industrial clusters dominated by Longbailufeng titanium industry, Yunnan titanium metal, Wuding titanium metal and so on, creating conditions for building a world-class titanium industrial base.

The advantage of industrial chain. Relying on the advantages of titanium resources, Chuxiong Prefecture has continuously increased its efforts to develop the titanium industry, and made great efforts to extend the titanium industry chain and enhance the competitiveness of the titanium industry. The whole industry chain has cultivated the development of titanium enterprises. There are 31 titanium industrial enterprises. There are 500000 tons of high titanium slag, 300000 tons of chlorinated titanium dioxide, 50, 000 tons of sponge titanium and 20, 000 tons of titanium materials. At present, it has become the world's largest sponge titanium production base and an important chlorination titanium dioxide production base, with good conditions for developing to high-end titanium alloy products and extending the titanium industry chain downstream.
