Chanel, L'Oreal, and Kao all fell in love with rPET for cosmetic packaging gloss, processing and molding

At the beginning of this year, 36 beauty cosmetics companies around the world, led by beauty giant L'Oréal, German home personal care giant Henkel, Brazilian beauty giant Natura&Co, French luxury giant LVMH and European consumer goods giant Unilever , personal care companies and associations, announced the establishment of the Eco-Beauty Score Consortium.

The alliance aims to establish a transparent industry-wide cosmetic environmental impact assessment and scoring system, guide the industry and consumers to pay attention to recyclable, reusable or renewable packaging materials and refills, and commit to the sustainable development of the cosmetic industry.

01Chanel launches food-grade rPET cosmetic powder box
French cosmetics manufacturer Texen has developed a cosmetic compact made from food-grade recycled rPET and used its BESST technology to create sustainable packaging for Chanel's "Les Beiges" beauty products.
According to Texen, the solution is designed to specification and meets the aesthetics of the Eco-design requirements of the House of Chanel.
Texen explained that there are challenges in the manufacture of thin-walled, compact packaging products with hinged forms that are difficult to assemble and use recycled materials for two-shot injection molding. The company said it spent 18 months investing in research and development to improve the overall performance capabilities of the product.
From the sourcing of recycled materials, the use of paint, and the Groupâs investment in Beauty Experience Sensation Surface by Texen (BESST) technology, Texen optimizes the manufacture of parts, including ultra-thin parts, through BESST technology to deliver premium aesthetics and absolute shine .
This collaboration with Chanel also supports the goal of sustainable packaging, producing a 10cm x 10cm compact made of food-grade rPET for Chanel's "Les Beiges" product.
Texen previously worked with L'Oréal to design a cap made from 100% recycled PP for its Biotherm skincare line.
02Japan's Kao Twany brand began to use food-grade rPET
Japan's Kao Co. is using recycled PET plastic in its select cosmetics, and plans to start using rPET in its Twany cosmetics brand starting in June this month.
Kao is working with PET Refine Technology to use chemically recycled PET material on its cosmetic bottles, a chemical recycling technology that matches the performance of packaging containers made of rPET material to those of virgin PET material.
This recycled material is certified by the Japan Food Safety Commission for use on food containers. Kao said the use of recycled plastic has long been considered a challenge in terms of color printing, gloss and other issues. But this material makes it possible to use recycled materials in cosmetic packaging, and the technology enables a stable supply of rPET materials.
Last year, L'Oreal cooperated with French green biotechnology company Carbios. Carbios used its enzyme technology to produce cosmetic packaging bottles made of 100% recycled plastic, which will also be fully used for the first time in L'Oreal's skin care brand Biotherm. L'Oreal Group plans to put into production in 2025. This disruptive and innovative packaging bottle.
Carbios explained, âOnly clear plastic can be recycled in a closed loop, where quality decreases, making it difficult to obtain new products from 100% recycled PET, and our enzymatic technology can solve this problem, Our innovative technology allows unlimited recycling of all types of PET waste, producing 100% recyclable PET products without sacrificing quality.â
