Solvent-based dispersant

A solvent-based dispersant is a specialized surfactant or polymeric additive designed to stabilize solid particles—such as pigments, fillers, or nano-materials—within organic solvent systems. Its core function is to prevent particle agglomeration and settling, ensuring a uniform, stable dispersion essential for consistent performance in final formulations.

 

The dispersant achieves this through two key mechanisms: steric stabilization and electrostatic repulsion. In non-polar organic solvents, steric stabilization is dominant. The dispersant molecule has an anchoring group that adsorbs strongly onto the particle surface, while its solvated polymeric chain extends into the solvent, creating a physical barrier that prevents particles from coming close enough to agglomerate.

 

These additives are critical in high-performance solvent-based paints, inks, coatings, and plastic color masterbatches. Key benefits include:
