The main differences between thermoplastic phenolic resin (Novolac) and thermosetting phenolic resin (Resol) are as follows:
Structural Difference
Thermoplastic: Linear structure, soluble and meltable.
Thermosetting: Three-dimensional (network) structure, forming insoluble and infusible cured products upon heating.
Synthesis Conditions
Thermoplastic: Acidic catalyst, lower formaldehyde/phenol ratio (0.8-0.86:1).
Thermosetting: Alkaline catalyst, excess formaldehyde (1.1-1.5:1).
Curing Method
Thermoplastic: requires a curing agent (e.g., hexamethylenetetramine) for cross-linking.
Thermosetting: cures through self-reaction of hydroxymethyl groups upon heating.
Applications
Thermoplastic: Molding compounds, grinding tools, etc.
